The earth says “Hello!”

Oh, hey there! Thanks for taking the time to checking out my work as a User Experience (UX) designer. My name is Rainer Oktovianus and you can call me, Rainer. I’m flexible with pronouns, so you can use he/him or they/them, interchangeably.
I’m a person of creative focusing visual design. As a UX designer, I respect designs that are detailed-oriented, simple and mostly work for us humans to interact with. The use of beautiful typography and colour that complement each other, well you can say it’s my Achilles heel.
I’ve taken several projects from a national level, regional to a more humble projects that are closer to my heart. Within that time, I’ve evolved as a designer and as a person. I grow my ideas through different experience and opportunity that comes my way.
Outside of UX, I’m also a professional photographer and videographer with a dash of certified drone pilot. I started as Rain Images Photography back in 2010 and then decided to use my name as my brand in more recent years. I will feel honoured if you also visit my bodyworks in this website: www.raineroktovianus.com/photography.

Redesign? Revamp? but why?
Did I mentioned I’m also a photographer? Just kidding, but not really. I used my own website that I build from scratch as my very own UX project. Too comfortable with the same layout and content for years, truly gives me the push start to be better as a designer.
With some generous feedback from clients and friends through surveys as part of my UX research, I’m able to present a much human-centered design. One of them is opting from multi-page website to a mobile-friendly single-page. Let’s be honest here, most of us are glued and simply can’t function without our smartphones.
This is how my old website used to look like:

Multi-page nightmare. The layout is inconsistent, and users are forced to navigate through multiple sub-pages to find what they need. While the site is responsive, the navigation experience could be improved.
Initially, I designed the website with desktop users in mind, rather than the more prevalent mobile audience today. After shifting my focus to my audience and their needs, I began my redesign project.
Design process
My design process always starts with a rough sketch of the idea. Like Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine, solar power concepts, or time-machine thingamajig, simple ideas have the potential to grow and evolve into something extraordinary†.
I aim for a clean, minimalist website with plenty of negative space to draw attention to the images rather than the text. Furthermore, I want it to mobile-friendly with a one-pager or long-scrolling layout. I start with lofi wireframe that shows several sections that flows like a story to my users attention.
When it comes to color and typography, I stick to the same minimalist philosophy. I lean toward earthy tones, using #bbb5a4 as my primary color and following the 60:30:10 design rule. At the same time, I consider how my website can be accessible to all users.
Aesthetically, I’m confident it will look stunning when combined with several photographs of my work!
†I’m not comparing myself to the great Leonardo da Vinci—just inspired by how big ideas often start small 🙂
